The bad news: Mass attendance in parishes across the country has declined significantly. A recent study found only 33% of Catholics attend Mass weekly.*

But the good news? We can change this! The study also says that friendly encounters are key to keeping people engaged. That means a simple smile, a kind word or a welcoming gesture can make all the difference.

At Saints Martha and Mary, we know the power of a warm welcome. In fact, we’ve heard beautiful stories of people who attended Christmas Mass, felt embraced by our parish and decided to return! So, let’s build on that. As part of our Next Generation Parish priority of “Engagement in Parish Life,” we’re committed to creating a culture of invitation and belonging.

How can you help?

Here are a few ways to make everyone feel at home:

• Extend a personal invitation. Share your experiences—whether it’s attending Mass, participating in a ministry or enjoying parish events. Invite others to come along.
• Offer a warm welcome. A smile and a simple “hello” can make all the difference.
• Introduce yourself. Take a moment to introduce yourself to someone new and ask their name.
• Make room. Whether at Mass, Donut Sunday or other parish event, a friendly “come sit with me” can make someone feel included.
• Follow up. If you meet a new face, greet them again next time, even if you have to ask their name again.
