Feeding the hungry is one of the corporal works of mercy. As Jesus says in Matthew 25:35 - "For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink;..."
HISTORY
Twenty years ago, a group of teenagers and adults from St. Catherine of Sweden took breakfast to the East Liberty Presbyterian Church men's shelter. This soon became a monthly event. In 2013, the East End Co-op moved into their new building and began housing both men and women. The EECM Ministry started providing breakfast every Saturday morning.
HOW IT WORKS
Every Saturday at 6 a.m., we gather in the St. Catherine parking lot and carpool to East Liberty, returning around 8:30 a.m. Most of the food we bring is prepared by members of the ministry, with bagels, pastries, and bread donated by Panera. Volunteers can participate in various ways - some people prepare food, while others help serve meals at EECM. The ministry welcomes all ages and meets the second Saturday of every May. Each week, we need 7 to 9 volunteers to make it a success. Volunteers aged 18 and under need to have a clearance. High school students can earn service hours for their participation.
WHY JOIN?
The people we serve are incredibly appreciative. While other organizations provide dinners, we are the only group that consistently offers breakfast. This is a great way to give back to the community and meet new people. We look forward to your participation!
